The Building Resilience programme

Building good governance in small London based charities

About the programme

We are delighted that the City Bridge Trust have provided continuation funding to support this programme to enable us to deliver further assistance to small charities all across London.

We know that, despite their hard work and passion, many boards of small charities lack the full range of skills, knowledge and expertise required to help govern their charities most effectively. And in very small charities, it is very often the same people who lead the organisation as well as handle the day to day operations.

Yet we also know that there are a lot of useful services out there, provided by a range of great organisations, but one of the greatest barriers to effective governance is making charities aware of the information and resources available to them that give them the means to successfully implement the principles of good governance.

Thanks to funding from the City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation's Charity we deliver a 3 year programme that aims to build the skills and expertise of boards in small London based charities so that they are better equipped to respond to the challenges they face.

We carried out research to assess what support is already available and consulted with our members on what does and does not work, and thereby identified gaps in governance provision. We explored ways of filling those gaps through working in partnership and collaboration with a range of sector bodies. This information was then shared with all our members across the UK who were kept updated with how they could get involved throughout the course of the programme.

Last November we celebrated the launch of our Building Resilience programme at the beautiful University Women's Club in Mayfair. Our Chair Simon Hebditch presented the findings from our programme so far, as well as explaining the next steps we plan to take. Lindsay Driscoll presented an excellent workshop on the principles of Good Governance, as set out in Good Governance: A Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector.

Governance Support Services

As part of our research phase of the programme, we have compiled a list of Governance support services available in London and across the UK which you can download here.

The Charity Governance Code

We're basing a lot of our work around the 7 principles set out in 'Charity Governance Code'. The renamed code is an updated version of the previous Code of Good Governance, which has proved time and time again to be a great toolkit to help improve governance and organisational resilience. We hope the Building Resilience programme will help to support and develop the great work of the Code.
