Trustee - Compliance/Risk Focus Experience
Classroom Malawi's mission is to provide a safe and suitable learning environment for the children of Malawi which improves attendance, academic performance and aspiration – ultimately offering a sustainable route out of poverty. In partnership and consultation with the Malawi Ministry of Education, local communities in Malawi and partners here in Scotland, they work with priority schools in Malawi to provide young people with the opportunity to attend school in a safe, clean and friendly learning environment.
We are looking for someone with experience of working across the areas of charity governance, compliance and risk management, to take strategic oversight of our governance in the UK and Malawi, plus strategic risk analyses of Classrooms for Malawi’s expansion. We are about to embark on a new three-year plan to the end of 2023 which requires for the charity to expand its reach and activities to enable many more children in Malawi to achieve improved education attainment levels. The trustee will have a good understanding of the role CSO’s provide in bringing about change for the lives of people living in poverty.
Oversee the charity compliance and governance and ensure the charity pursues its stated objects.
Bring expertise and experience in strategic planning and risk analysis.
Ensure monitoring and review of the charities risk register.
Monitor and review the charities policies and procedures and ensure they are sufficient to ensure best practice.
Support the board of trustees with compliance aspects of our planned new MEL framework.
Oversee the safeguarding responsibilities of the charity.
Contribute skills, experience, advice and understanding of compliance, risk and legal experience around programme planning, employment legislation and fundraising.
Qualities – essential
A strong track record in a legal or compliance profession.
Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
Experience of preparing and writing policies and procedures.
The ability to provide valuable oversight and strategic judgement, and address complex issues collaboratively.
A deep commitment to social impact and sustainable development.
Qualities – desirable
Previous experience of the third sector and charity law is desirable.
Knowledge of governance and compliance of international NGOs is desirable but not necessary.
The necessary networks and contacts to assist Classrooms for Malawi to achieve its strategic goals effectively.
Experience of monitoring and evaluating programme work and impact measurement.
Role: Trustee – Compliance / Legal / Risk. In addition to the specific responsibilities stated, you will assume all the usual duties of a trustee as stated in our Trustee Manual.
Volunteer: Trustees are volunteers. The role is not accompanied by any payment, however reasonable expenses may be claimed e.g., local travel.
Time:3-year fixed term. Review after 1 year. Estimated 2-3 days per month, including attending quarterly board meetings. Note, board meetings are currently held monthly online.
Location: We are based usually in Glasgow however remote applications are welcome.
