How to become a mentor

If you are here, it’s because you want to use your skills and experiences to help the small charities that keep our communities going and that’s a wonderful thing.

Becoming a mentor gives you the chance to advise and guide a small charity through a challenging area of work. The rewards, not only for the small charity but for you, can be huge.

How it works

You will  work 1-2-1 with a trustee, staff or volunteer from a small charity to help them build their skills and confidence.

Rather than doing the hands-on work for the charity, you will  mentor, advise and guide the charity in a specific area of their work e.g. business planning, finance or HR.

Matches could simply be a one-off phone call or continue for a up to 3 months. They can be remote or face-to-face and are flexible to meet both the charity and your needs.

Why get involved

Volunteering as a mentor is about giving something back to the community, using the skills you already have. Most charities in the UK are small and 73.5% have less than 100,000 turnover. Small charities are often all too aware of what they need help with, and that’s where you come in. There’s no skill too obscure or time your willing to give too small. We make meaningful matches and you give your expertise.
Previous mentors have told us about a whole host of benefits to volunteering in this way, including:

Developing new skills as a mentor or advisor

The opportunity to use your skills in a new context or in a different way

Improved self-confidence through advising and supporting others

A chance to give something back by using the skills you already have
